Anything is indeed possible

I have just finished watching the season finale of the 2011 US reality adventure series from ABC called ‘Expedition Impossible’. It was held in mostly Morocco. The total of thirteen teams had endured a lot of challenges, from the dessert sand to the ice cold snow, all of the teams that didn’t have what it takes got eliminated one by one.

The first team to cross the finish line after completing the ten stages of the competition will receive USD$150,000. In addition, each team member will win a new Ford Explorer. Created by producer Mark Burnett and hosted by wildlife expert Dave Salmoni, the series premiered on ABC on June 23, 2011 to mild critical response. But for me, it presented a much better alternative than ‘The Amazing Race’. It wasn’t actually better, but it had that adventure element down pretty good.

Expedition Impossible is run in ten "stages", each of which has a series of "checkpoints". At each checkpoint, teams receive instructions on how to reach the next checkpoint and at some checkpoints they face challenges that must be completed before heading to the next checkpoint. The last team in each stage to reach the final checkpoint is eliminated. If any member of a team quits, the team is eliminated.
What I wanted to talk about was one team. They are called ‘No Limits’. A team composed of

Erik Weihenmayer, who is  42, and is a motivational speaker/writer. His other teammate is Jeff Evans, 41, from Colorado who is a motivational speaker/physician assistant. Finally there’s Aaron "Ike" Isaacson, 33, from Topeka who is a soldier
Jeff is Erik's climbing guide on mountaineering expeditions because Eric is blind.  Yup. You read right. One of the members of this team is blind. Not looking good on paper as the teams were being introduced early on the series.

For those who didn’t watch the series, one member of the this team, ‘Ike’ got into an accident during the expedition that had him injure his foot to a point where the show had to put a cast on it.

So we have a blind man, a guy on the cast literally hobbling through checkpoints in the race and yet despite these seemingly bad conditions, this team survived.

No, they didn’t win 1st place but they inspired something in me that really lit my belly. A fire that was put up slowly as wear and tear wore on.

‘No Limits’ stuck in there and eliminated teams one after the other to the point where one team ‘aligned’ to help them because they were just full of enthusiasm and passion for winning that it was infectious.

Truth be told, I wasn’t rooting for them to win during the early stages but as the series progressed, you can’t help but feel something for a team that was in many aspects, inferior physically, but mentally, they were the toughest.

It was a series I enjoyed watching overall, with its many ups and downs, there was a lot of highs as well. Fast paced new adventure series that I do hope gets picked up again next season by ABC.

Now, can’t wait for the U.S. season 13 of Big Brother to end in a few weeks as well. Kalia and Porshe winning Head of Household and the power of Veto is a welcome surprise.  Jeff finally got the boot from the Big Brother house and thus leaving his girlfriend Jordan all by her lonesome.

Its September so I’m also preparing for new US seasons of Survivor, CSI, Dexter, Fringe and Supernatural. For now, I have to make do with my staples Hell’s kitchen, Warehouse 13, and Covert Affairs.  But that my friends is another article altogether.
